iphone 12 – Google Pixel 6 Radical Upgrade Suddenly Confirmed
The Pixel 6 is coming, and one key feature looks set to bring a new level of performance to Google’s next flagship smartphone.
In a recent hands-on session attended by The Verge, Google’s Senior Vice President of Devices & Services, Rick Osterloh, revealed how the Pixel 6 camera scores a decisive victory over the iPhone 12 Pro Max when shooting video.
For this demonstration, Osterloh showed three video clips recorded while panning across a sunset beach, first with the Pixel 6, then with a Pixel 5 and finally with an iPhone 12 Pro Max. According to The Verge, the Pixel 6 produced better-looking results than the iPhone, while there was “no contest” between the new Pixel and the Pixel 5.
The key to the Pixel 6’s dramatic improvement lies in its new home-grown Titan M2 system-on-a-chip (SoC) and, in particular, its new “Tensor” machine-learning processor, which Osterloh described in a recent Google blog post.
The Tensor processing unit leverages Google’s expertise in machine learning, shrinking technologies deployed for its datacenter TPU products down to a size suitable for mobile devices.
Google’s image processing has always enabled Pixel smartphones to deliver photos of a much higher quality than their hardware might ordinarily allow. Now, thanks to Tensor, the Pixel 6 has proven itself fast enough to deploy the same technologies to video at 4K/30fps. This level of processing power, alongside radically upgraded camera hardware will result in a huge leap in photographic capability for the Pixel 6.
As for what else the Pixel 6 might have in store, we’ll have to wait until “Fall 2021” . One thing is for sure: the camera is going to be very exciting.
