iphone 12 – Should You Buy a New iPhone Now or Wait for the iPhone 13?
Every year, we expect Apple to release a new iPhone, among other devices. Although last year we saw delays to the iPhone 12 line-up, everything looks to be on schedule for the 2021 iPhone to release in September. But what if you need a new phone now? Should you buy the current iPhone model or wait for the latest and greatest Apple has to offer?
Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of each option to help you decide whether to buy a new iPhone now or wait for the iPhone 13.
What to Expect From the iPhone 13
When it comes to what to expect from the iPhone 13, the first place to start is actually the name. We’re not certain if the device will be called iPhone 13 or iPhone 12S. But rather than 2021 iPhone, we’ll go with iPhone 13 for this article.
We’re expecting four new devices again, just like the iPhone 12 line-up. We should see the baseline model, a mini model, a Pro model, and a Pro Max model.
When it comes to features, we don’t think too much is changing with the iPhone 13. We expect the notch to shrink ever so slightly–it won’t get shorter, just less wide. We’re also expecting a 120Hz Pro Motion display on the Pro models, just like the iPad Pro.
Apple will probably deliver the usual camera improvements we’ve come to expect, and a new processing chip, which will probably be called the A15. There was a point at which we thought the iPhone 13 Pro models would re-introduce Touch ID, but new reports have pushed this back to 2022’s iPhone line-up.
That’s pretty much everything we expect on these new devices. Of course, all these expectations come from unconfirmed reports, and Apple could surprise us with other features–but it’s unlikely. It seems pretty certain we’ll see the iPhone 13 at the usual September event, which isn’t too far away now.
Reasons to Buy the Current iPhone Now
One of the top reasons to buy an iPhone now is the cost. The current iPhone 12 line-up has been out for almost a year now, and previous years’ line-ups even longer. You’re much more likely to find deals on these devices to get them for a cheaper price. The iPhone 12 has almost all the same features we expect for the iPhone 13, so you won’t be missing out either.
Another factor to consider is how quickly you need a new phone. Obviously, if you can’t use yours at all, you’ll need to get a new one now. If you’re looking at the iPhone 12, it might be worth waiting until the iPhone 13 comes out to watch for any bigger price reductions then.
You’ll also want to consider what features you’ll actually use on the device. If you don’t need the latest and greatest features, such as the LiDAR sensor, consider an older device. iPhones from two or three years ago will still work perfectly for many users, especially if you’re not going to put the device through heavy use.
Reasons to Wait for the iPhone 13
One of the biggest reasons to wait for the iPhone 13 is to get the latest and greatest features, specifically when it comes to performance. If you’re more of a power user who puts your iPhone through the wringer, it might be worth considering an iPhone 13. We expect Apple to upgrade the processor, and you’re likely to notice the performance upgrade.
Some of the other new features might also be worth it for the more tech-savvy iPhone users. The expected 120Hz display is a long-awaited upgrade for fans, as many Android devices have come with it as standard for years. And if Touch ID does make an unexpected return to the iPhone, I’m sure many users will prefer it over Face ID while wearing a mask.
It’s also worth considering that you’ve got a safer device. Statistically speaking, something fresh out of the factory line has less chance of being faulty, especially when compared to an iPhone that’s pre-owned or been sat in a box for a year. And finally, you’ll be more likely to get extra software updates than the previous iPhone models thanks to the newer processor.
Buy the Device That Suits Your Needs Best
Overall, you probably don’t need to wait for the iPhone 13 to replace your phone, especially if you’re currently using the iPhone 12. We only expect a few new features on the iPhone 13, which probably won’t warrant the new price tag. But if you are waiting for the latest and greatest, the iPhone 13 is for you.
It goes without saying that you should wait for the iPhone 13 to actually come out, if you can. While lots of reports are pretty accurate, you’ll get a better idea of whether you should upgrade when the iPhone gets unveiled on stage.
